Mississippi Assisted Living

SeniorLiving FAQ

In this research guide you will learn how to get a COMPLETE, non-commercial, Statewide list of Assisted Living & Senior Care Facilities Provided by the State of Mississippi.

Unfortunately, as compared to most other states, Mississippi is one of the more challenging states to research Assisted Living & Long-Term Care.    Many other states provide robust, state-sponsored databases of Assisted Living Facility information, complete with inspections report and more.   Mississippi has a ways to go to catch up.

However, there is some information provided through the Mississippi State Department of Health that we will go over here.

A note about Commercial Senior Living Sites:

You’ll be able to find a wealth of “information” out there online for Assisted Living in Mississippi.   However, many of these sites are commercial in nature, and present some potential problems that you should be aware of.

  1. Commercial sites are often not updated frequently
  2. Commercial sites often omit important information such as direct telephone numbers, administrator contacts, and pricing
  3. Commercial sites may also collect personal or private information that may be sold to third parties

We’ll suggest to ‘just be careful’ when researching online.

Definitions

Importantly, one of the first sections is Definitions – how the state officially defines the different types of Health Facilities & Care Options.  Personal Care Homes, and Home Health Agencies are important categories for Senior Care in Mississippi.

Assisted Living is not in the definitions which is unusual, but there are Assisted Living Facilities listed in this directory.  I’ll show  you in a moment.

Finding Assisted Living in the List

Assisted Living is not in it’s own category, and it’s not immediately obvious on the list.   Unfortunately, given that this is a .pdf, you can’t sort or drill down to categories easily.

I did a “Command+F” or “CTRL+F” Keyboard combination to search for the phrase “Assisted Living” in the list, and that’s where I was able to identify what’s available in Mississippi.

There are quite a few in the list.  Information for each facility includes:

  • Facility Name
  • Facility Address
  • Facility Capacity
  • County
  • Phone
  • Licensee
  • Additional Notes

Assisted Living Regulations in Mississippi

One of the things the State of Mississippi does provide are it’s Health Facilities Rules & Regulations, which can be easily viewed, and saved.

Regulations

Viewing the Regulations for Personal Care Homes/Assisted Living, you’ll be able to view/save a .pdf for Minimum Standards for Personal Care Homes / Assisted Living.

This is a 40+ page document that provides an overview of what is legally expected from Personal Care Homes / Assisted Living in the State of Mississippi.

Why Having Access to & Understanding Regulations is Important

Having direct access to Rules and Regulations provides seniors and their families a way to understand how a facility is to be managed and operated.  Families will be able to factually and constructively address potential health, safety or privacy issues that may come up with the care received.

With this in mind, it’s also critical to know how to file a complaint should an issue arise – especially an issue that is not being resolved or addressed adequately by the facility staff or management.

How To File a Complaint

The Mississippi State Department of Health provides a direct resource for filing complaints against any licensed facility in Mississippi if you believe you have received poor quality care. There are a number of ways to do so:

Complaint Poster

The complaint form has fields for your personal information, however, they do state clearly that this is not required.  Basically, this says that you may submit an anonymous complaint.

Complaint

Being able to anonymously submit is important.   At times, residents of senior care facilities may be reluctant to complain, for fear of consequences or retaliation.  Elder abuse is all-too-common in our Senior Care facilities.

Additional Resources

Mississippi Council for Assisted Living (MCAL) – MCAL represents the interests of assisted living/personal care facilities in the state.
